Crossing Australia for charity

“Destino Remoto” or “Remote Destination” is formed by Irene and Pablo, a Catalan and a Madrilenian, who are full of inquisitiveness, dreams and projects.

After a few years living in Australia, we want to leave the country doing something big, something epic, something that we’ve dreamt about a million times since we first arrived.

Can you imagine crossing Australia from side to side? Can you imagine driving the big loop and viewing the wonders of this country in the most authentic possible way? So this is what we aim to achieve shortly, we want to accomplish this travel, this challenge, this adventure, this dream.

However, we didn’t want to do it just like that. So we’ve resolved that this dream will have its caring and charity side. To do so, we want to collaborate with Fundación Talento MCR, a Spanish charity that carries out a praiseworthy task by supporting kids, sick and elderly people.

The challenge is as follows: we set out on a trip of more than 10,000 km around Australia, at an average of 150 km per day and you can “sponsor” kilometres. We’ve assigned a value of $1 for each 5 km, so we’d need to raise funds at least $2,000, that will be utilised by Fundación Talento MCR to purchase material and games for the activities carried out at retirement homes and kids’ hospitals. Do you want to help us to help them?

So that you can have a better idea of the complexity of this challenge, the distance we intend to cover would be the equivalent km between Madrid and Seoul. Therefore, to be more practical, we’ve decided to divide our trip into 10 stages or phases, of approximately one week each. We’ll depart from Sydney on the 8th of October, driving up the East Coast, crossing the Outback to get to the West Coast, to finally drive down south to reach or final destination, Perth.

All of that, in our fabulous 1998 Subaru Outback, which we’ve been wanting to take to the Outback, since we bought it, one and half years ago. Our Subi – that’s how we name it – has a bed, wardrobe and kitchenette, so it will become our rolling home for the next two months.

Our idea is to document the stages through Destino Remoto and its Facebook page, as soon as we have access to internet. This is our trip plan:

We do as much research as we can, but we are always happy to know about more from people who has experienced this kind of trip before! And stay alert to all details if you also want to achieve this dream or simply want to know more about this country/continent.
